Barn Owl In East Yorkshire

Barn Owl - East Yorkshire

It was a bitterly cold Saturday morning at the end of January when my photography friend and I set out on our usual weekend jaunt.

Not sure what we were ‘targeting’ that day we headed to the East Yorkshire coast starting at Filey Brigg, and boy was it wild. After a couple of hours and a few shots of the Oyster Catcher, Turnstone, Curlew (that surprised us) and a Great Northern Diver we settled for a bacon butty & cuppa at Bakers Cafe and headed off to Bempton Cliffs, making the resident Short Eared Owls our relatively easy target

We arrived at Bempton only to be advised we had missed the Shortie activity by around 20 minutes. Not put off, we decided to have a stroll along the cliffs

The Gannets had started to arrive along with a fair number of Fulmar, pairing up on the cliff face in preparation for the breeding season. Still a while yet before the Puffins start to arrive though

We had just about given up when we were alerted to Shortie activity in one of the fields. Two Shorties put a distant display that we managed to get a couple of decent shots. Our mission was done so we headed back to the car to head off home. We hadn’t got far when the Barn Barn Owl pictured decided to have a hunt and what a display it was.
